As I was shopping today, I noticed something that I wanted to share with you.
I bought a large box of Kayem hotdogs because it’s getting to be “that season” and they were on sale for $8.99, according to the Market Basket circular. When I picked up the box, I noticed that it was distinctly lighter than it used to be. As I suspected, the weight is now 2.5 lbs. instead of 3 lbs. for the same price.
All companies do this from time to time. To up their profit margin, they reduce the package size and present it as “new and improved.” Do you remember a few years ago when the standard size of tuna cans went from 6 oz. to 5 oz.? Or a couple of years ago when the standard size of a yogurt cup went from 8 oz. to 6 oz.?
We know that this happens, and all I would advise is that you stay aware of these things so you can make an informed decision about whether you want to stick to the brand or maybe try something generic instead.

Rite Aid is changing their coupon policy and will no longer allow a Buy One Get One Free coupon to be used in conjunction with a Buy One Get One Free sale. This is a big bummer. You also may no longer use more than 4 of the same coupons at the same time, which I actually like because it will discourage “shelf clearers” (one of my coupon pet peeves.) There are a couple of other changes which you can see HERE.

Also, if you have a chance to run over to Shaw’s today, there a couple of things that you shouldn’t miss this week. Sale ends today.
Shaw’s coupon in the circular makes Skippy peanut butter $1 each for the 16 oz size.
Shaw’s coupon in the circular makes Ragu pasta sauce $1 each.
Ken’s marinade $1 off 1 coupon from a few weeks ago makes Ken’s Marinade FREE!
Ronzoni Veggie pasta $1 off 1 coupon from a couple of weeks ago makes it FREE!
Sweet Baby Rays’ BBQ sauce $1 off 2 coupon from last week makes it $.50 each when you buy 2!
Wacky Mac coupon for $1 off 2 makes Wacky Mac (on sale BOGO) $.21 each when you buy 2!

My most recent effort to try to cut my food budget even further is an attempt to go to the store less. I am going to try going only once per week (when possible) to avoid the inevitable impulse items. Even if they’re veggies and fruit, they’re still things that I wouldn’t have bought if I hadn’t gone to the store, and it will force me to “shop in the freezer” more often.

One more thing: I bought some bone-in chicken breasts at the store today for $1.19/lb. I am going to attempt to break them down myself with the help of this video. This is a first for me, so wish me luck!
